TB test for a UK student visa: what to do from Kyrgyzstan?
Kyrgyzstan has no Home Office-approved TB clinic. You must travel to Kazakhstan (Almaty or Astana). Full plan + prices + alternatives.
Key facts in 30 seconds: Kyrgyzstan is the only major Central Asian country without a Home Office-approved TB clinic. For a student visa (or any visa for 6+ months) you must take the test in Kazakhstan — Almaty is the nearest option, 240 km from Bishkek. Test cost £80–150, travel £30–50. Certificate valid for 6 months.
Kyrgyzstan: no approved clinics
The Home Office maintains an official list of approved TB clinics for each country. For Kyrgyzstan that list is empty.
Official source: gov.uk/government/publications/tuberculosis-test-for-a-uk-visa-clinics-in-kyrgyzstan — no clinics listed. Verified: 26 May 2026.
This is not a temporary situation. The IOM (International Organisation for Migration), which operates most approved clinics in Central Asia, has centres in Kazakhstan but not in Kyrgyzstan.
A certificate from any private clinic in Bishkek is not accepted by the Home Office. Only a test at an officially approved clinic is valid — which means travelling to Kazakhstan.
Approved clinics in Kazakhstan
Kazakhstan has two IOM Migration Health Assessment Centres:
IOM MHAC Almaty
Address: Toraighyrov St, Almaty
Distance from Bishkek: ~240 km, 3–4 hours by bus
Cost: £80–150 (paid in KZT)
Booking: by email/phone, appointment required in advance
Website: iom.int (Kazakhstan Health Assessment)
IOM MHAC Astana
Distance from Bishkek: ~1,300 km, flight only
Cost: £80–150
When to choose: if you are already in Astana for other reasons
Important about booking: IOM clinics do not accept walk-ins. Book at least 7–14 days before your desired date. You will need your passport number and visa purpose when booking.
Comparing your options: where to go?
| Option | Distance from Bishkek | Test cost | Travel cost | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Almaty (Kazakhstan) | 240 km, 3–4 h by bus | £100 | £30–50 (bus) | £130–150 |
| Astana (Kazakhstan) | 1,300 km, flight | £100 | £150–200 (flight) | £250–300 |
| Tashkent (Uzbekistan) — if closer | ~700 km from Bishkek, flight | £80–100 | £50–100 | £130–200 |
| Moscow (Russia) | Flight, 5–6 h | ~£70 | £150–300 | £220–370 |
Almaty is the optimal choice for residents of Bishkek and northern Kyrgyzstan. Tashkent may be closer for those in the south (Osh, Jalal-Abad). Before travelling to Tashkent, confirm the IOM clinic there accepts Kyrgyz passport holders.
Step-by-step plan — from decision to visa
- Book your visa appointment at the embassy or VAC. First choose a date for your UK student visa application through VFS Global or Teleperformance. The visa appointment date determines when you need your TB certificate.
- Book your appointment at IOM Almaty. After booking the visa appointment, contact IOM MHAC Almaty and book a test slot 7–14 days before the test date. The test must be done before the visa appointment — ideally 14–30 days earlier.
- Travel to Almaty (documents: passport only). Bring only the passport you are using for the visa application. The test includes a chest X-ray. In some cases a sputum sample is also taken. The entire process takes one working day.
- Receive your TB certificate. The certificate is usually issued the same day or the following day. It is issued in your name and linked to your passport. It cannot be transferred to another person.
- Return to Kyrgyzstan and submit your visa application. The TB certificate is attached to the visa application as a mandatory document. Without it the application will not be accepted.
Validity window: The TB certificate is valid for exactly 6 months from the test date. If your visa application is delayed beyond that period, you will need to retest. Do not leave the test until the last moment.
Who needs a TB test for a UK visa?
| Visa type | TB test required? |
|---|---|
| Student visa (12+ months) | Yes — mandatory |
| Short-term study (6–11 months) | Yes — mandatory |
| Skilled Worker visa | Yes — mandatory |
| Spouse / Family visa (6+ months) | Yes — mandatory |
| Standard Visitor visa (up to 6 months) | No |
| Children under 11 (any visa) | No |
| Pregnant women (X-ray) | Special protocol — notify the clinic in advance |
Kyrgyz nationals are on the Home Office list of countries where TB testing is mandatory for visas of 6 months or longer. This requirement is set by the Home Office and is independent of your medical history.
Common mistakes
- Getting tested at a private clinic in Bishkek — not accepted. Only an IOM or other officially Home Office-approved clinic qualifies. Full list: gov.uk.
- Leaving the test until the last week — if the certificate expires before your actual entry to the UK, you will need to retest.
- Notarising the TB certificate — not required. It is a medical document from an accredited clinic and is accepted as issued.
- Assuming active TB means an automatic refusal — it does not. You complete treatment (3+ months) and retest. There is no automatic refusal.
- Translating the TB certificate yourself — unnecessary. IOM clinics issue the document in English.
Frequently asked questions
Can I take the TB test in Bishkek?
No. The Home Office has not approved any clinic in Kyrgyzstan. A test at a private clinic or state hospital in Bishkek is not accepted. The only option is an approved clinic in another country — the nearest is Almaty, Kazakhstan.
Why is there no approved clinic in Kyrgyzstan?
The Home Office accredits clinics through the IOM. The IOM has centres in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Russia and several other countries — but has not opened a centre in Kyrgyzstan. This is an administrative gap, not a medical one. It is unclear when this will change.
Can I take the test in Russia?
Yes. IOM MHAC Moscow is on the list of approved clinics. However, given logistics and flight costs, Almaty is significantly more convenient for Kyrgyz nationals. If you are already in Russia, the Moscow clinic is a valid option.
How much does the whole process cost, including travel to Almaty?
Test £80–150 + bus Bishkek–Almaty £30–50 one way + overnight stay if needed £20–40. Total: £130–240. This is a one-off cost that forms part of the overall UK student visa budget (~£3,300 in total).
When is the best time to take the test?
14–30 days before your visa appointment is ideal. Not earlier — to avoid the certificate expiring before you actually enter the UK. Not later than 7 days before — to allow time if the booking process is delayed.
What if the TB test is positive?
You will need to complete a course of treatment (minimum 3 months), after which a retest is taken. Your visa application will be delayed but will not be automatically refused. The Home Office expects documentation of completed treatment and a clear retest.
Do children need a TB test?
No. Children under 11 are exempt from the TB testing requirement regardless of visa type.
