Credit cards in the UK — who can get one and when
Updated 27 May 2026
Mainstream issuers (Barclaycard, HSBC, Lloyds) require 6–12 months of UK credit footprint. Credit-builder cards (Aqua, Vanquis, Capital One Classic) accept thin-file applicants after 3 months at a UK address. From 15 July 2026 BNPL falls under FCA regulation and data flows automatically to credit files. Asylum seekers (pending decision) typically cannot access credit cards — no NI number means affordability checks fail.
Refugees, ILR holders and Skilled Worker visa holders can all get mainstream credit cards in the UK — but not immediately. You need to build a credit footprint first (3–12 months) via a basic bank account + utility direct debit + credit-builder card.
01 Types of credit card by accessibility
- Credit-builder cards (Aqua, Vanquis, Tymit, Capital One Classic, Zable) — for thin-file and new arrivals. High APR (29–50%), low limit (£250–£1,500). Use 30% utilisation and always pay in full → mainstream cards become accessible in 6–12 months.
- Mainstream cards (Barclaycard, HSBC, Lloyds, NatWest, Halifax, Santander, MBNA) — require 12+ months of UK credit footprint + electoral roll registration (or a Notice of Correction if you are not eligible to vote).
- Reward / Premium cards (Amex Gold/Platinum, John Lewis Partnership) — typically 24+ months footprint + UK income of £30k+ minimum.
- Subprime / "fair credit" cards (Marbles, Ocean) — for rebuilding after a CCJ or default. APR 30–40%, very low limits.
02 By your immigration status
ILR / British citizenship
Full market access. All issuers available. Pre-approved offers via credit report apps (ClearScore / Credit Karma) show what you will be approved for without a hard search.
Refugee status (5-year leave — pre-2 March 2026)
Credit-builder cards from arrival with a UK address (Aqua, Vanquis). Mainstream cards after 12–24 months of credit footprint. Key barrier: refugees are generally not eligible for the electoral roll (requires British/Irish/qualifying Commonwealth/EU settled status). Lodge a Notice of Correction with Experian, Equifax and TransUnion — this partially substitutes for the electoral roll check.
Skilled Worker / Health & Care
Credit-builder cards after 3–6 months. Mainstream after 12 months. Many issuers require remaining visa term ≥ the card term (or 12+ months).
Family / Spouse visa
Joint application with a UK ILR partner — mainstream access immediate. Solo on visa — same path as Skilled Worker.
Student / Graduate
Student-specific cards (NatWest, HSBC student accounts) — yes. Mainstream credit cards — usually declined (thin affordability).
UPE / Homes for Ukraine
Credit-builder cards after 3–6 months. Mainstream rare due to 3.5-year capped permission.
Asylum seeker (pending decision)
No NI number → affordability check fails. A basic bank account is a statutory right under PAR 2015; credit cards are practically unavailable.
03 How to apply for a credit-builder card
- Open a UK basic or current account → get a debit card.
- Set up 1–2 utility direct debits in your name (mobile phone contract, council tax).
- Get free credit reports — ClearScore (TransUnion), Credit Karma (Equifax), Experian (free tier).
- Apply to Aqua or Vanquis. They run a soft search initially; a hard search only happens on final application.
- Use 30% of your limit. Always pay in full by the due date. Set up a direct debit for the minimum payment as a safety net.
- After 6 months of clean history, pre-approved offers from mainstream issuers will start appearing.
04 What to avoid
- Do not apply for 3+ cards at once — multiple hard searches damage your score.
- Avoid payday loans — FCA-regulated but flagged as a "subprime distress signal" on your credit file.
- Do not ignore default notices — they stay on your credit file for 6 years.
- "Guaranteed card with no refusal for £100" — scam.
- "CCJ removed in 24 hours" — only the court or the original creditor can remove a CCJ.
