Unavailable scholarships — myth-busting

These scholarships are often listed as "available" — this is incorrect for Central Asian nationals.

Commonwealth Scholarship

NOT AVAILABLE for CA

Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan are not members of the British Commonwealth. This scholarship is only for citizens of Commonwealth countries.

Why not available: None of the 4 Central Asian countries belong to the Commonwealth of Nations. The programme covers approximately 56 Commonwealth countries — former Soviet republics are not included.

GREAT Scholarships 2026-27

NOT AVAILABLE for CA

GREAT 2026-27 eligible countries: Bangladesh, China, Egypt, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Thailand, Turkey, Vietnam + Spain, France, Greece, Italy.

Why not available: Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan are not included in the 2026-27 eligible country list. Check britishcouncil.org annually — the list may change.

Chevening: how to apply and what matters

  • 2,800 working hours of experience. Chevening requires 2 years of work (≈2,800 hours) by the time the programme starts. Volunteering and part-time work count proportionally.
  • Mandatory return home for 2 years after the scholarship. This is a binding commitment.
  • Leadership potential + public profile. Chevening seeks future leaders. Blogs, projects, community activities all count.
  • Three reference letters. One must be from a current or recent employer.
  • Application deadline: 7 October 2026 (for September 2027 start). Opens: 5 August 2026.

Competition. Chevening awarded around 1,500 scholarships worldwide in 2025-26. For Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, typically 5-15 places are allocated. This is competitive but realistic — especially for candidates with experience in NGOs, media or government.

IsDB: less competition, broader coverage

All four Central Asian countries are IsDB Member States, making their nationals automatically eligible for the Islamic Development Bank Scholarship Programme.

  • Three tracks: Master's, PhD, and post-doc (significantly less competition than Chevening)
  • Coverage: tuition + monthly stipend + book grant + medical insurance
  • Deadline: typically 31 January for the 2027-28 cycle (verify at isdb.org)
  • Obligation: work in your home country or another IsDB Member Country after completing the programme

Why the Commonwealth myth keeps spreading

  • Commonwealth Scholarship is for citizens of British Commonwealth countries
  • Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan are NOT Commonwealth members
  • No former Soviet Central Asian republic is in the Commonwealth of Nations
  • GREAT Scholarships 2026-27 eligible countries: Bangladesh, China, Egypt, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Thailand, Turkey, Vietnam + 4 EU countries — no CA countries

If an agency promises Commonwealth Scholarships for nationals of Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan or Tajikistan — this is either a mistake or misleading. Always verify eligibility directly on the official scholarship website.

University-specific scholarships — how to find them

  • University of Westminster Full International Scholarship: full tuition + £10k/year living allowance
  • University of Edinburgh Global Scholarship: £5-10k merit-based
  • Most Russell Group universities have international excellence awards covering 10-25% of tuition
  • IsDB partner universities offer additional support for IsDB scholars

Tactic. First choose a university and programme. After receiving a conditional offer, ask admissions: "What scholarships are available for international students from my country on this programme?" Most university-specific scholarships don't require a separate application — you are automatically considered when you apply for admission.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply for both Chevening and IsDB simultaneously?

Technically yes. However, Chevening requires that you "not have other funding" when confirming your place. If you receive both, you must choose one. Applying to both in parallel is standard practice.

What IELTS level is required for Chevening?

Chevening requires IELTS Academic minimum 5.5 at application — a low threshold. But the university you apply to typically requires 6.5+. So practically, you need IELTS 6.5+ to be enrolled on a Chevening-eligible programme.

What does the "return home" obligation mean for Chevening?

After completing the scholarship, you must return to your home country for at least 2 years. Chevening tracks compliance through its alumni network. Breach of obligation theoretically requires repayment of the scholarship, though enforcement in practice is rare. It is still a serious legal commitment.

Does freelance work count towards the 2,800 hours for Chevening?

Yes, if you can document it: invoices, bank statements, contracts. Chevening requires evidence of employment, but the format (employed/freelance/self-employed) is not restricted. Volunteering counts proportionally.

When does the next IsDB cycle open?

IsDB typically opens its cycle in November-December with a January deadline. For the 2027-28 cycle, expect opening around November 2026, with a deadline around 31 January 2027. Monitor isdb.org — this is the only authoritative source.

Why do I need a Bachelor's to apply for Chevening or IsDB?

Both require a bachelor's degree as the entry condition for a Master's. If you only have a school certificate, you first need Foundation + Bachelor's (4-4.5 years), and only then can you apply for Chevening/IsDB for a Master's.

Can I get a scholarship for a Foundation Year?

Chevening and IsDB cover only Master's and PhD, not Foundation. For Foundation/Bachelor's, look at university-specific scholarships (Westminster Full International, Edinburgh Global). Some NCUK partners also offer merit-based bursaries.
