English-only courses and UKVI sponsor licences
If you want to study English only on a course of 12+ months, you need a Student visa — but only if the school holds a UKVI Sponsor Licence. Most UK language schools have this licence, but not all.
Important: if you start an English-only course on a Short-term study visa and later want to extend or move to the next level, this is not possible from inside the UK. You would have to leave and apply for a new visa. Check that the school has a UKVI sponsor licence before paying.
Frequently asked questions
Can I work on a Short-term study visa?
No. Short-term study and Visitor visas do not permit work in any form. The only study visa with work permission is the Student visa (up to 20 hours per week during term, full-time during vacations).
Do I need a visa if my course is online?
No. If you are studying remotely and not physically entering the UK, no visa is required. This page is for those travelling to study in person in the United Kingdom.
What is a UKVI Sponsor Licence?
A Home Office licence that allows an institution to issue a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) and act as a sponsor for Student visa applications. Without this licence, a school cannot sponsor Student visa applicants. The register of licensed sponsors is available at gov.uk/government/publications/register-of-licensed-sponsors-students.
Can I switch from Short-term study to Student visa inside the UK?
No. A Short-term study visa does not permit in-country switching. If your course changes or extends beyond 11 months, you must leave the UK and apply for a new visa from your home country.
Are there special rules for PhD students on Student visa?
Yes. PhD students receive a Student visa for the duration of the course plus 12 months. They may also bring dependants (spouse and children), which is not permitted for Bachelor's or taught Master's students. The Graduate Route after a PhD is 3 years rather than 2.
