5 steps from a Central Asian Bachelor's to a UK Master's
UK universities assess foreign diplomas independently. Many accept Central Asian Bachelor's degrees directly. If a university requests an ENIC Statement of Comparability, obtain it at enic.org.uk (£49.50, 15 working days).
- Apostille first — Hague Convention 1961, all 4 Central Asian countries are members
- Notarised English translation of diploma and transcript
- ENIC SOC (if requested by university): enic.org.uk/applications/soc
- Ask admissions: "Does my Bachelor's from X meet your entry requirements?"
From 1 January 2024: Master's without dependants — details
| Programme type | Dependants allowed? | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Taught Master's (MA, MSc, MBA) | ✗ NO | Since 1 January 2024. Affects the vast majority of Master's programmes. |
| Research Master's (MRes, MPhil) | ✓ YES | Only if the course is ≥9 months and classified as RQF Level 7 research |
| PhD (DPhil) | ✓ YES | Dependants permitted for PhD for the full duration |
| Government-sponsored | ✓ YES | Chevening, IsDB and other government scholarships — dependants allowed |
This is critical for families. If you have a family and plan to study on a taught Master's (any MSc, MA, MBA) — your dependants cannot come with you. They can apply separately as Visitors, but not as dependants. Alternative: PhD or a scholarship with government sponsorship.
Document apostille: step by step for each country
All 4 Central Asian countries signed the Hague Convention 1961 — apostilles are recognised in the UK without further legalisation.
- Academic documents (diploma, transcript): State Testing Centre (GTC) or Ministry of Justice
- GTC apostille has special status for educational documents
- Notarised English translation — separate document
- Ministry of Justice (CRU) — apostille on any document
- Notarised translation via a notary or certified translator
- Processing: 3-7 working days
- Ministry of Justice — apostille
- Ministry of Education — diploma verification on request
- Translation via notary
- Ministry of Justice — apostille
- Academic documents: also via Ministry of Education if required
- Notarised translation — separate document

Frequently asked questions
Can I switch from a Master's to a Skilled Worker visa?
Yes. After a Master's: Graduate Route 2 years (from 2027 — 18 months if completing after 1 January 2027). During Graduate Route, find work, receive an offer from a Skilled Worker sponsor, then switch. For new entrants after Graduate Route, the Skilled Worker threshold is £33,400 — lower than the standard £41,700. More: Skilled Worker hub →
What if I'm refused by a Master's programme?
Two options: 1) Reapply to the same university in the next cycle with an improved application (ask for feedback on why you were declined). 2) Apply to other universities — direct-to-university submission allows simultaneous applications to 5-10 institutions. For complex cases (e.g. previous visa refusal), an IAA-regulated lawyer: find one →
How many hours per week can I work on a Master's?
20 hours per week during term, full-time during holidays — same rules as for Bachelor's. On Graduate Route after a Master's — no restrictions (any work, any hours).
Is UCAS needed for a Master's in the UK?
No. UCAS is only for undergraduate programmes (Bachelor's, Foundation, HND). Master's and PhD applications go directly through each university's own website. Each university has its own form and portal. Application fee: £0-100 depending on the university.
Is a Central Asian diploma accepted without ENIC at UK universities?
Many universities assess Central Asian diplomas independently and accept them directly. An ENIC Statement of Comparability (£49.50, 15 working days) is optional, but some universities request it. Check with the specific university's admissions office: "Does my Bachelor's from [University, Country] meet your entry requirements for [Programme]?"
Can I apply for a Master's before receiving my IELTS results?
Yes. Many universities accept applications before IELTS and issue a conditional offer — with the condition "provide IELTS X.X by [date]". Then you fulfil this condition. Useful for planning: apply first, then take IELTS.
What is RQF Level 7 research Master's?
Research Qualifications Framework Level 7 — the academic level of a Master's degree. Research Master's programmes (MRes, MPhil), unlike taught ones (MA, MSc, MBA), are based on independent research without coursework. Only research Master's of ≥9 months retain the right to bring dependants since 2024. Confirm with the university when applying — what type of programme it is.
For information only. Graduate Route and dependants rules current as at May 2026. Monitor gov.uk/student-visa for updates. This is not immigration advice. For a personal plan: IAA-regulated lawyer →
