Travel with an eVisa: check your passport in advance
Before returning to the UK, check the passport in your UKVI account, your eVisa details and the information held by your carrier. If you have a new passport or have already been stopped from boarding, choose a guide below.
- Sign in to your UKVI account and check your valid passport and status.
- Check that the name and passport details in your booking match your document.
- If you have a new passport, update your account before travelling and check the result.
New passport and checks before travelling
Your account must contain the valid passport you are travelling with. Check its number, name, nationality and expiry date, and check your status and the validity period of your permission in your eVisa. If you have several passports, add the one you will use.
For a new passport, open Update your UKVI account. If sign-in asks for your previous document, use the details linked to your account. Updating your passport does not replace extending your visa. While you are waiting for a decision on a visa application, you cannot change your name or passport through this service.
If you are abroad with a biometric passport, GOV.UK allows you to update your passport number and expiry date, name and nationality. For other changes, you need to contact UKVI. With a non-biometric passport abroad, you can update the number and expiry date yourself; for other changes, you also need to contact UKVI, and you may need to attend a biometrics appointment.
Do not rely on a fixed “seven days”: check in advance that the change has been accepted and you can see the correct document. If details are wrong, use the error correction process rather than creating a second account.
How your carrier checks your eVisa
Your carrier can check your immigration status using your passport details. This is why the document in your UKVI account and the details given to the carrier must match. A mismatch may delay your journey or result in denied boarding.
You can also get a share code for travel in advance through View and prove. It is valid for 90 days. Choose travel or another check as the purpose, rather than the right to work or rent. The code is an additional way to show your status; it does not replace your passport or remove the carrier's checks.
If your status cannot be confirmed at check-in
Calmly ask what the reason is: passport details, status in the system or another document. Ask a senior member of staff to check the details again. If the carrier cannot confirm your immigration status, ask them to contact the UK Border Force carrier support hub — this is a channel for carriers.
Show your valid passport and any available proof of status; use a share code if needed. If there is an eVisa error, report it through GOV.UK; if you have lost access, start recovery. Keep your reference number, tickets, correspondence and the explanation for the refusal.
UKVI support does not guarantee a correction before departure. If you miss your flight, separately ask your carrier about rebooking terms and complaints: compensation and reimbursement of expenses are not automatic. Do not send your passport or sign-in codes to a group chat to get urgent help.

Check the requirements for every part of your journey: transit documents, whether you need to leave the transit area and the airline's rules. A UK eVisa is not permission to enter another country.
Check that the spelling of your name on the ticket matches your passport. If different carriers operate your route, check each one's document checking procedure. This is preparation for travel, not a promise of boarding without problems.
If your status or documents are different
For a seasonal worker, the conditions of your own permission and the deadline for returning matter. Do not assume that rules for people with indefinite status, citizenship or protection apply to you. If your right to return is unclear, contact a regulated adviser before buying a ticket.
British and Irish citizens, including those with another citizenship, do not need an eVisa to enter: GOV.UK specifies the relevant passport or a certificate of entitlement to prove right of abode. For travel with a different travel document, protection status or a pending application, check the process for your specific situation with UKVI or an adviser.
What to prepare before leaving
Do the checks while there is still time to ask for help. Make sure you will be able to receive messages through your linked email or phone while abroad. Save the official links and your reference number if you already have an open enquiry.
- A valid passport and the correct document in your UKVI account.
- Correct name, photo, status and dates in your eVisa.
- Matching details in your booking and with your carrier.
- Access to your email or phone and an additional share code if needed.
What preparing your documents does not resolve
A correct eVisa helps prove your status but does not replace the other travel requirements. A screenshot does not guarantee that a document will be accepted, an expired BRP does not become valid, and the code's 90-day validity does not extend your visa.
If a technical problem remains, keep evidence of your enquiries and discuss the options with UKVI and your carrier. Svoi cannot correct a government record, authorise boarding or promise reimbursement.
Frequently asked questions
Can I travel with an eVisa without a BRP?
Yes, an eVisa is used to prove status, but you need a valid passport or an accepted travel document and must meet the travel conditions. Your passport must be correctly linked to your account; an expired BRP is not suitable for travel.
What should I do if the airline denies boarding?
Ask for the reason and request another check. If the carrier cannot confirm your status, ask them to contact the UK Border Force carrier support hub. Keep your documents and contact UKVI separately if there is an error.
Which share code does the airline need?
Get a code for travel or another check through the official View and prove service. A code for the right to work or rent is intended for a different purpose.
Do I need to do anything before an international flight?
Check the passport in your UKVI account, your eVisa details, the validity period of your permission and the information held by your carrier. Update a new passport in advance and make sure the change appears.
